CollegeGrad.com presents "When a Cover Letter is Needed"—do you really need a cover letter? And if so, when and in what format?
Hi, everyone. I'm Brian Krueger with CollegeGrad.com and this is The Job Search Minute. A cover letter should be used any time you are targeting a specific employer. Whether you are sending your resume on paper, email or submitting online, the cover letter will provide details, which a resume cannot. When sending your resume as an e-mail attachment, the email itself will serve as your cover letter. When submitting online you simply include it as an additional attachment. Your cover letter should be to a specific person, at a specific company. Not sure who that person is? Call to find out, and you should state the specific next step you will be taking. If you wait for the employer to call you, your odds of contact decrease dramatically. It usually requires a proactive response on your part to move the process forward to the next level.
